The Lighting Certifications You Should Care About

When upgrading your existing lighting setup or investing in a new one, choosing efficient LED lights that perfectly suit your illumination needs and space is likely your top priority. Although planning a lighting system can take some time to ensure you're optimizing every bulb in your business or commercial building, it's worth it as you can save potentially tens of thousands in energy costs depending on your usage and business space.

Perhaps more important are the certifications your new flood light bulbs and other LED fixtures carry. These certifications are crucial for meeting your local regulatory guidelines and ensure your business is operating according to local laws. They also help verify the quality and energy-efficiency of the LED products you’re purchasing. So, before you order and install new lights, it’s important to understand the certifications behind common lighting solutions.

Here are a few of the common lighting certifications you should pay attention to while building out your LED lighting infrastructure.

UL

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is a not-for-profit certification agency recognized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for providing safety, quality, and environmental tests and certifications for over 22 million products worldwide. They are also one of the most recognized agencies with over 40 types of certifications. UL follows strict standards to ensure every product bearing their certification mark meets their world-class safety and quality standards.

ETL

Intertek’s Electrical Testing Labs is another OSHA-recognized testing laboratory with over 1,000 laboratories spread out over 100 countries in the world. The company tests products for quality and safety along with environmental impact with 24 different certifications or marks following different standards from across the lighting industry. It is common to find light solutions with the ETL mark and it is a universal sign the product is safe for home or commercial use.

ENERGY STAR

Lights bearing the ENERGY STAR logo are certified to use almost a quarter of the energy of a conventional variant. This also means that the products last longer as well, with ENERGY STAR-certified light bulbs lasting between 10,000-50,000 working hours—which means you won’t need to replace your new LED bulb for floodlight, such as your BR30 LED Flood Light Bulbs, for a long time. ENERGY STAR is one of the most common certifications and most well-known around the world as the standard for energy-efficient lights and other electrical appliances.

DLC

This certification is issued to commercial LED lights based on light distribution, color rendering capabilities, longevity, lumen maintenance, and durability (among other capabilities). LED light manufacturers must typically go to independent testing labs for the Design Lights Consortium certification, and it is often required for LED lighting rebates.

Lighting Facts

To ensure that your new LED bulbs will hold up over time, delivering optimal brightness, manufacturers have their lights tested for their brightness, lifespan, energy consumption, and light appearance. Once the federally-approved laboratory finds the product meets its strict standards, the light will receive Lighting Facts certification.

While not every bulb will display all of these certifications, make sure that you’re purchasing products that have at least one or two to ensure that they are safe for your commercial or residential space and will suit your lighting needs.
